In 1889 The University of Minnesota a group of men were elected by the student body to direct crowds of people attending games at the University to cheer. Their 6 member male squad became known as cheer leaders, and they were the first of their kind. 1903 a sorority, known as Gamma Sigma, was founded to represent all cheerleaders. Females did not become active cheerleaders until 1923 due to the rise of women’s rights. Around this time gymnastics, tumbling and megaphones were added to routines.
The first cheerleading clinic was held in 1949 in Huntsville, Texas by the prompting of the National Cheerleaders Association which was founded a year prior. 52 cheerleaders attended the clinic and the styles of cheerleading uniform they chose are still the basic style of cheerleaders today. In 1965 Fred Gastoff invented the now infamous cheer pom. Made of vinyl and assembled in round formations these hand held props would chance the face of cheerleading forever. Also about this time the NFL developed cheerleading squads for many of their teams. The Baltimore Colts were the first team to have an active and performing cheerleading squad to represent their team.
The 1980s brought to life modern cheerleading with many difficult stunts and dance-like routines instead of cheers. This new style was more fun for audiences everywhere because they were not only being led to cheer by cheerleaders they were being entertained as well. In 1987 The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors was founded and started applying safety standers and performance rules to lower the number of injuries that were being acquired. Since this time cheerleading has been an avid sport for individuals of all ages.
